In a goal of trying to get some perspectives for 2018, I am reading through “Tools of Titans” by Tim Ferriss. Ferriss is the host of the Famed “The Tim Ferris Show” Podcast on iTunes. If not the number podcast offering, it is definitely in the top ten. Tim is kind of an everyman, an amalgamation of a resume, that spends his days chatting up everyone from corporate leaders, WWE wrestlers, politicians, and music icons like Rick Rubin.
Tools of Titans gives a great snapshot of experts, leaders, and other celebrities in a broad section. Broken out into topics by the author of Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise. The degree of personal insight given is mind blowing. This is one of those books that you read a bio and give yourself time to reflect on what is written.
Some of my favorites are Rick Rubin, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Peter Thiel. And the format is modified enough that each is engaging. Ferris doesn’t simply ask the same 10 questions over and over, but in culling the many podcasts he shares uniques stories, insights of what works, how they learned from success or failure, who their heroes are, and much more.
Here are some of my favorites from the book.
Listening is about being present, not just being quiet – Cal Fussman
My Goal is not to fail fast. My Goal is to succeed over the long run. They are not the same thing – Marc Andreessen
The section my Peter Thiel probably had some of the starkest points made for me, with his discussion on asking if there is something in life you want to do, why wait or have some 10 year plan. Life is to short, do it now.
